Standards Revision Project 2006-2009 initiated

The Standards Council, which functions as a part of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation to steward the standard setting process, is now initiating a major revision of the educational standards that are used to evaluate interior design programs. This revision will result in standards for interior design education effective in 2010 and beyond.

As you know, great care is exercised in constructing educational standards. To assure the most relevant and up to date standards, data regarding not only current conditions, but also future trends affecting interior design practice, related industries, educational institutions, and accreditation practices are collected and analyzed.

The Standards Council requests community participation in identifying reliable sources of information to inform standards development. Please submit information or suggestions for reliable sources of information to the Standards Council at the Council for Interior Design Accreditation office (holly@accredit-id.org). Data analysis will begin May 1, 2006.

Subjects of particular interest to the Standards Council include:

  • Social, economic, cultural, and political issues impacting the field
  • Field specific data regarding market forces, such as changing client profiles and project types
  • Emerging design services needed and the knowledge, skills, and abilities designers need to provide them
  • Trends regarding effects of new technologies on design projects, products, and practice
  • Factors influencing higher education, such as methods of delivering instruction, changing student profiles, economic forces, etc.
  • Business skills or knowledge that employers seek in entry-level interior designers, for instance, accounting, finance, organizational behavior, leadership, etc.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss the standards revision project further, please feel free to contact Suzanne Scott, as Chair of the Standards Council (scchair@accredit-id.org), or Holly Mattson, the Council’s Deputy Executive Director, (holly@accredit-id.org).

Thank you most sincerely for your continued interest and support of the work of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.
